Autumn Style Staples

Each year, around about this time, I start to think more about what the staple items in my autumn and winter wardrobe will be. I switch all of my summer clothes out for my autumn ones at the very start of the season and get inspired and excited by all the things I’ve forgotten about over the past few months. It takes a few weeks for me to work out what the key items are going to be in my wardrobe though. The ones that I might need to buy a few more versions of, the ones that are going to influence any other purchases I make and the things that I just can’t be without as the temprarure drops.

Year to year there isn't always that much variation. After all, being based in the UK means that it gets pretty chilly pretty quickly. Every year the warm socks and thermals make an appearance without fail. It’s the other things though, the slightly more trend-led items that tend to change. This year there are 4 items that I’m going to be wearing again and again.

Straight leg jeans: Jeans are a staple for me all year round. They're my favourite thing to wear and just go with everything. For years I’ve been a very loyal skinny jean advocate but recently I've stated favouring a straight leg style. I find they’re that but more comfortable as they’re slightly baggier and also just look a bit more contemporary. Skinny jeans have their place, for sure, but day to day it’s a straight leg style that I'll be reaching for. My favourites? M&S and Topshop.

Very Chunky Knits: It's a no-brainer that knitwear features here. Not only is it one of my favourite things but it’s a universal autumn essential. This year I want the super chunky knits though. The ones with the huge rolled necks, bigger and slightly looser knits and the ones that just keep you so warm that you don’t always need a jacket if you layer up well. I love the oversized and casual look paired with jeans for the weekend of a silk slip skirt for a more fashionable look in the week.

Statment boots: I love an ankle boot, especially one thats got the perfect height heel - 2 inches. It’s low enough to be able to easily walk around in on an every day basis but also adds that little bit of height and makes an outfit look a little more dressed up. I love a boot that’s a little bit different, maybe it's the print, maybe it’s the details on it, whatever it is they're a great way to finish off an outfit whilst adding something extra.

Smaller hand bags: Opting for a smaller bag is a huge trend this season and for good reason. Theres something freeing about not carrying around everything you own and especially when you’re bundled up in coats and scarves. Just throw a cross body bag on and you’re done. This rich brown tone goes with everything and is the perfect autumn colour. It fits in everything I need on a day to day basis and now it also comes in black too, I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to resist for.
