Planning My Spring Wardrobe
Now, I don’t want speak to soon but recently I have started to walk to the station in the light and even leave the office when it’s not entirely dark. I know, we’re a long way off of warm weather and long evenings yet but we are slowly starting to get there. With that my thoughts have started to turn to my spring wardrobe. Despite my love of warm weather I find that autumn and winter fashion falls much more into my style comfort zone. I’ve always been more excited about fashion at these times of year so I’ve found it much easier to refine my style over the years. But every year I seem to struggle a bit and feel la little lost when it come to spring and summer fashion.
Part of the problem is that because I never really know what I’m looking for I don’t tend to buy very much at all but when I do it tends to be an impulse purchase meaning that the clothes I do have I don’t really love, and often they aren’t really that fit for purpose. Last summer I really started to get to grips with what my spring/summer style was so I’ve been excited to turn my minds to brighter colours and lighter fabrics once again.
This season I really want to start to build more of a capsule spring wardrobe, a collection of items that I love, that suit me and that work with a number of different outfits. It felt great come Autumn to be able to sit back and just pick up the occasional extra piece and I want to get to a point where I can do that for my spring weather too. So here’s where I’m starting, the trends that I will be incorporating and where I’m drawing my inspiration from.
Pinterest: For the first time in ages I have taken to Pinterest to build some inspiration boards for this season. I really feel like I am starting from scratch this time round and that I just want to consume all of the inspiration I can to try and work out the style that I want and the framework that I want to keep in mind when I am picking out items. Currently my boards are including a lot of structured items, light coloured trousers, mixed neutral tones and the occasional pop of colour with a blouse or accessory.
The trends: This spring seems to be all about the neutrals and mixing different tones, something that I can certainly get on board with. When it comes to incorporating this trend it’s probably one of the best places to invest in because the chances are the you will get a lot of wear out of the items for years to come, irrespective of other trends. Pieces I’m on the look out for in particular are lace/broidery anglaise blouses, camel and beige trousers and a button up chunky cardigan. I’m also going to be adding some browns and khakis into the mix, I’ve been loving how stores have been styling these shades together and curating entire collections for them so I cant wait to start bringing these into my wardrobe.
Hints of colours: I’m never really one for adding a lot of colour to my wardrobe, I’m much happier investing my neutrals and monochrome. But this spring those typical pastel shades are back yet again and are making waves in the way of silk & satin shirts. I’m a massive fan of this style as I love the juxtaposition of the soft fabric against the structured cut of a shirt. I already own a blush pink one but I wouldn’t mind adding in a lilac or turquoise option too. Styled with blue denim and black boots now or with white denim and sandals when it gets warmer, they’re a great way to add in a little colour to a look. There is also, of course, my bright pink suit from last summer that I can’t wait to start wearing again.
Midi skirts and dresses: Not only is a midi-length super flattering on most people but they’re also what I feel most comfortable in. Personally I don’t really like getting my legs out and having long legs means that even the more modest mini skirts come up a little higher than I would like. Midi is a style that isn’t going anywhere soon, it’s ideal for layering and mixing with different sites throughout the transitional seasons but also work well in the warmer months. This season I’m on the hunt for the perfect structured off-cream midi dress, a little more khaki and maybe some black too. I know black isn’t ‘traditional’ for this time of year but I adore wearing black when I have a bit more of a tan and layering up jewellery.
I love building my wardrobe for a new season, seeing what I’ve already got that I can re-style and identifying any gaps in my wardrobe. I usually only get this excited for Autumn and Winter though so to have a new stream of inspiration is something I have been really enjoying. This Spring is all about the considered purchases that are going to last me thought this year but also into the future seasons.
