5 Summer Staples For Every Wardrobe

5 Summer Wardrobe Staples

I've always struggled more with summer style than autumn and winter. Maybe it's because of the unpredictable weather (it was sunny and 30 degrees before we started taking these photos) or the fact that I'm not naturally drawn to bright colours. Whatever the reason, over the past few years I’ve managed to build a summer wardrobe full of classic basics that sit outside of that seasons trends. They’re the clothes I always reach for when I’m not sure what to wear, they work regardless of the unpredictable British summer weather and they create a great foundation for your wardrobe.

There’s nothing groundbreaking or trend-led here, just the types of styles I love that have become my ultimate summer basics. Because these are all things that you can wear year after year, there are plenty of affordable options in charity shops or on online secondhand platforms like eBay or Depop. It may take a bit more searching but if it’s accessible to you then it’s a much more eco-friendly way to refresh your wardrobe and even come across a bargain.

Linen Trousers

Linen is always my summer go-to but linen trousers are such a wardrobe essential. They’re light-weight so keep you cool, the style always looks understated but easily dressed up and once you embrace the creasing you won’t look back. Go for a white or light neutral pair for a chicer look.

Cami Tops

Whether they’re strapless, embroidered, crocheted or just your standard vest top, camis always have a place in a summer wardrobe. They’re versatile, perfect for relaxed days in the local park or dressing up in the evening. The ones with more interesting details or made from slightly different materials like silk or wool add another texture to your outfit and make the whole look more interesting.

White Shirts

I'm the white shirts biggest advocate. In the summer they can double up as beach cover ups, provide a bit more cover on cooler days and always look pulled-together with jeans, linen trousers, over dresses or with skirts. Pick one that's oversized for a more comfortable and relaxed vibe.

Accessories

Finding a few pieces of basic jewellery that you can mix and match with any outfit really helps to bring an outfit together, especially if it’s a more simple one. Layering a couple of necklaces easily finishes off a look, but if you don’t want anything too heavy then some detailed earrings, rings or thin bracelets work just as well. Straw bags always add another dimension to an outfit (whilst also being practical), and a silk scarf looks great tied around a bag handle or in your hair to finish everything off.

Midi Dresses

A lightweight midi dress will answer all of your summer outfit worries. An oversized fit will be comfortable, keep you cool and avoid any sweat patches whilst the length means you aren’t worrying about flashing your knickers every 5 minutes, no matter how long your legs are. They’re another super versatile item and embody one of my favourite things about summer fashion: you can throw on one item and instantly look like you put in more effort than you have.
