The seasons have officially changed and we are now in the middle of Autumn, the best time of year. Not only are the cosy evenings, comfort food and crisp mornings a welcome change, I think we can (almost) all agree that Autumn also gives way to some of the best fashion opportunities. It’s still warm enough that you don’t have to cover every outfit with layers of thermals and big coats, but it isn’t so warm that you recoil at the sight of an ankle boot. It’s the perfect time of year.

You’ve probably gathered, Autumn is my favourite time of year for putting together new outfits. And whilst I’ll always opt for a jumper and boots over shorts and sandals there are still a few items from my spring and summer wardrobe that will be making an apperance well into the winter. This is partly because I’ve spent the past few seasons carefully selecting clothes for my wardrobe that deliberatuly work at multiple times of the year and also go with the vast majority of items that I always own. It’s also in part due to my ever growing effort to be a bit more conscious about my consuption and making sure I get the most out of everything I own. The new collections that are launched at this time have me auto-filling my card details by far quicker than any other month, but that doesn’t mean i should be buying everything. Instead I’m trying to see what have been staples for me in the past couple of months and how i can restyle them for this season. It’s like going shopping without actually going shopping or spending money — a win-win.

White Jeans

Sure, we’ve all heard that “no white after Labor Day” rule but frankly, I don’t care. Not only is Labor Day not a thing in my life but personally I think there are few things that look as chic and contemporary as white jeans, worn well, with knitwear. I’ve spoken before about the best ways to style white in the winter, but my number one tip is to treat it like any other denim. On a warmer day I’ll go for a t-shirt with a blazer or mac over my shoulders (if you own a Prince of Wales Check then that would be perfect). When it’s a little chillier I’m quick to reach for the neutral knitwear, brown boots and layer up for a multi-tonal neutral look. Whatever the time of year, white jeans are always welcome in my wardrobe.

Floral dresses

They’ve been a huge trend for the past few seasons so the chances are that you already own one, and if you don’t and you’re looking for the perfect one then there are plenty out there to pick from. The choice can be overwhelming but if you opt for one with warmer and darker tones then it’s sure to see you through the autumn too. Layer up with thick black tights and a roll neck underneath to stay warm on the crisp mornings or brave the bare legs if we happen to get a little more sun.

Beige Trench Coat

I’ve professed my love of a good mac so many times before but it’s pretty much my go-to jacket from the first warm days of spring until I have to fully transition into my big winter coats. The warm neautral tone means it’s perfect for this time of year but also that it will compliment most outfits, whether you’re going bold or keeping it neutral. The overall style of a trench coat is timeless and is above the seasonal trends so, if you look after it well, it could last you for years. Whether it’s over a dress, layered over knitwear or just something to throw on to help pull together your outfit as you head out the door, my autumn wardrobe wouldn’t be complete without it.

Depending on your style, job and what you tend to get up to your staples may vary a little but I think on the whole there are plenty of pieces from our summer wardrobes that we can all bring into the cooler months. It gives you the chance to create some new outfit ideas and get more wear out of the things that you love, regardless of what the fashion “rules” say. Plus, this works the other way too. Say you’ve never owned white jeans and are desperate for a pair but feel like the season has now passed — no it hasn’t! Head out now and you may even be able to still find and end of season sale bargain floating around!
