The Best Autumn Winter Staples To Buy Secondhand
Looking to update your wardrobe for the new season in a more sustainable way? I’ve got you covered.
There are certain things I always look for secondhand. During the summer I shared a guide to the best summer clothes to buy secondhand and now we’re firmly into the autumn I’m sharing this season’s version. While you can buy anything secondhand there are certain items that I think are better bought secondhand than others, and some that I just tend to have more luck with tracking down.
Chunky Knitwear
Chunky knitwear being in for Autumn/Winter is as dead set as it raining on Bonfire Night. It’s the ideal staple in your wardrobe because on the slightly warmer days it can be worn alone but come the depths of winter you can layer up thermals. Some of my best loved chunky knits are vintage finds or ones from previous seasons that crop up on secondhand sites. There are so many out there already, and most only ever need a quick debobbling, that finding your perfect knit won’t be a struggle.
Where to look:
Vinted: ideal for new trends and must-have knits for the seasons
What to cHeck for:
Heavier knits being out of shape and the elastic in the hems and sleeves being over stretched
Cashmere
If you’re looking to dip your toe into cashmere then the secondhand market is surprisingly good for this. My first 2 pieces of cashmere were found in charity shops (for £10 each!), were in perfectly good condition and kickstarted my cashmere love affair. They might need a bit of debobbling or a small hole here or there stitched up but shopping secondhand makes it far more affordable. My favourite secondhand cashmere is from M&S and often you can hunt them down on eBay for less than half the RRP. Also don’t forget to keep an eye out for cashmere scarves, hats and gloves.
where to look:
Charity shops (especially in wealthier areas) and eBay
what to check for:
Shrinkage and holes that can’t be easily repaired
Coats
They’re a true staple for autumn winter but coats can be expensive, especially if you’re looking for a more tailored option that actually keeps you warm. The key here is to play the long game and to know your measurements before you start but if you’re willing to put in a bit of time then there are great coats to be found. Some of my favourites are from M&S, John Lewis and H&M. They’ve kept me warm, can often be washed at home and have more classic, timeless designs so you’re more likely to find a good price.
where to look:
eBay is great for a variety of sizes, styles and brands but it’s always worth taking a look in charity shops too just in case
What to check for:
Take your measurements beforehand to get an idea of how it will fit or try on similar styles in store first.
