It’s lightweight, easy to care for and is a trend that comes back around every single year. Linen is the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.
When it comes to curating your summer wardrobe, there’s no reason why linen shouldn’t be at the centre of it. The versatile fabric works for shirts, shorts, dresses or more smarter separates like blazers. It’s lightweight, easy to care for and is a trend that comes back around every single year. Linen strikes the balance between relaxed styling and a minimal, classic finish to an outfit. Whatever your budget or style there’s a linen item that’s perfect for you.
The natural fibres mean this is perfect if you’re in a warmer climate or just feel the heat. It allows your body to breath and air to circulate that bit easier, preventing that sweaty and sticky feeling. Even thicker linen styles can feel light to wear and work seamlessly with other summer staples in your wardrobe. They are also some of the easiest things to find secondhand. A quick search on eBay, Depop or Vinted will return hundreds of results, particularly for linen trousers and shirts for a fraction of the high street price. But if you’re struggling to find that perfect piece then I’ve also shared some of my favourites below.
The biggest complaint people often have with linen is the creasing, so you have a couple of options. Firstly, opt for a linen-blend material. You’ll get the same style but without quite so much creasing, go for a linen/cotton blend if you still want to stay cool. If you’re set on 100% linen then a steamer will become your best friend, it’s easier than ironing and helps to work out some of the deeper creases. Alternatively you can just embrace it. Creasing comes with the territory and personally I love the relaxed and undone finish it can give to a look.
The Linen Shirt
If you only buy one linen item, make it a linen short. By far the most versatile linen piece you can own, a shirt is your go to thrown-on-and-go piece with a pair of jeans, you can double-linen with a pair of trousers or shorts in warmer weather or use it as that extra layer or cover up over a strappy top or swimsuit. White is your classic but black and khaki can offer a versatile alternative.
The Linen Trouser
Comfortable, timeless and cool: what more could you want from a pair of trousers? They’re easy to style with a silk cami for a smarter evening look or just a casual t-shirt for weekend brunches and errands. My personal favourite is a true beige/linen colour, they make the perfect neutral base for any outfit.
The Linen Blazer
When you want to look smart, but not too smart, the linen blazer is perfect. Need an extra layer in the office or just want to feel a bit more ready for that summer wedding - it’s the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe. Again, a lighter tone will serve you well whatever your style and will pair nickel with smarter trousers or skirts if needed.
The Linen Dress
A linen dress is perfect for high summer. It’s lightweight, minimal material but can still give a more sophisticated and smart-casual vibe, perfect for returning to the office or any slightly smarter occasions where comfort in the heat is key.
The Linen Shorts
The latest addition to my linen wardrobe and the item i lived in last summer. They’re the perfect piece for those casual days where it’s too hot to even think about real clothes but also work well with a blouse or open shirt when you’re heading out. They’re basically the outdoor-appriorite summer answer to loungewear.
