Late Summer, Pre-Fall or Classic British Summer Time, whatever you want to call thIS awkward time, here’s your guide for what to wear

The ‘awkward’ time of year is here, it’s not quite time for the chunky knits and knee high boots but you’ll instantly regret leaving home without another layer ready and waiting. If you’re just not sure what you should be wearing right now or need some ideas of what to be investing in next then here are my go-to pieces for that pre-autumn season.

Wide Leg Jeans

Say goodbye to the tight skinny jeans and hello to the widest-legged, slouchiest jeans you can find. Trend forecasters just got that we needed to slowly transition out of that jogger & legging lifestyle and have served us up a treat. What makes these even better is when the temperature actually drops it’s easy to slide on a pair (or two) of thermals to keep these going all season long.

Lightweight Knitwear

Start the day looking like one of those Parisian-cool girls with it tossed over your shoulders, end the day layering it over whatever you’re wearing as you huddle under the outdoor heater at the pub. Trends that are easy to recreate, look great but are actually practical always have my vote. And this one helps you overcome that awkward British weather too. Win-win.

Oversized shirts/vest combo

Another nod to the fact we’re all heading back to work after 18 months of elasticated waistbands. An oversized shirt styled with some chunky accessories will always look great. They baggy nature will keep you cool when it’s warm and add that extra layer when it’s not. Perfect over a ribbed vest so you’re prepared just in case the sun comes to say hello.

Sweater vests

One of the biggest trends of last autumn/winter is back for another round. They work perfectly for those days when you just do not know what you wear, thrown over some white jeans, paired with some sandals. But as the mornings start to crisp up you can slip a shirt underneath for a slightly more trans-seasonal look that both captures the latest trends and actually works IRL.

Knitted Maxi Dress

Again, a trend where comfort is the main focus - sensing a pattern here? A knitted maxi always looks cool - whether it’s with sandals now, chunky trainers or you’re going all out with the knee-high boots come autumn. It will see you right through to the early days of spring giving you countless layering opportunities while still being one of the most comfortable things to wear. Buy one and thank me later.

An Oversized Blazer

You just can’t go wrong with a good blazer, and pick one that’s a bit oversized and you’re sure to fall in love. Why? They’re perfect for making even the most casual and comfy outfit look office appropriate but they’re also a dream at this time of year for adding another layer without being too constrictive on the warmer days. The oversized fit gives more of a casual take, lending this to a more relaxed summer look, while actually being oversized means there’s plenty of room for a thin knit to slide underneath should the need arise. Black, cream, brown, navy, whatever colour you go for, it’s a staple that will last you season after season, year after year.
