SUSTAINABLE STYLE ISN’T JUST ABOUT BUYING LESS AND FINDING “ECO” BRANDS, IT’S ALSO ABOUT CONSIDERING HOW LONG YOU’LL ACTUALLY WEAR SOMETHING FOR, AND THIS IS WHERE TIMELESS PIECES COME IN.
A large part of taking a more sustainable approach to fashion is not just buying less, but making sure that what you do buy is considered. Mindful shopping is a great way to start moving towards a more conscious shopping style but it’s not the only way. Focusing on adding timeless pieces into your wardrobe that you can care for and wear for years to come gives you a long-term approach to your wardrobe and the pieces you decide to add to it.
Timeless Style
Identifying what a timeless item of clothing is will be slightly different for everyone based on their own style and needs for their wardrobe, but generally they’re the items you could wear season after season. They’re the ones that are above the trends, would be staple pieces in your wardrobe and the sorts of things you could wear in multiple ways throughout multiple seasons. For me these are crisp white shirts, basic t-shirts and bodysuits, plain(ish) blazers and good fitting denim.
It’s not necessarily the items themselves that are more sustainable but the mindset. If you can afford to invest more or have the time to look into retailers that are doing better then of course do it, but it’s the approach that’s key here. Investing in basics and those pieces that will still have appeal in a few years means you’re getting more wear out of what you already have and aren’t constantly buying new items to fulfil a trend or sudden impulse. They’re also likely to make it easier for you to restyle items that you already have in your wardrobe so you also get more wear out of them too.
3 Steps To Building A Timeless Wardrobe
Invest in your basics
Investing doesn’t have to mean spending considerably more, it can just be spending more time taking into account the fabrics and overall quality of the item. Having a reliable collection of basic items will give you a great foundation for your wardrobe and their simple nature means they will be ideal to rewear year after year.
Make considered purchases
This isn’t just about practising mindful shopping in general but making sure that the items you’re selecting are fitting into whatever you’ve classed as “timeless” within your wardrobe. This could be a style you always go back to or something that really suits you but a a general rule it will be the type of thing you see created year after year with little variation and no clear trend associated with it.
Think About Silhouettes
One thing that massively dictates trends is the silhouette of an item. Extreme shoulder pads, low rise jeans and flares are all silhouettes associated with a very specific trend and this means they’re far less likely to fall into the timeless wardrobe category. Instead of what’s cool right now focus on the silhouettes that suit you and work for your style. Good fitting clothes will always look great and give a more elevated look to any outfit.
